The Requirements

To meet the basic qualifications for this role, will need legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. In addition, to be a strong fit for the ES&H Engineer opportunity, you will need:
  • A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental, Industrial Hygiene, Chemical or Mechanical. A related discipline may be considered based on equivalent years of demonstrated experience and proven results.
  • At least 5 years of direct experience implementing progressive ES&H programs with at least 3 years in a manufacturing environment (a master's degree in one of the disciplines above may be substituted for up to 2 years of experience). Quick question for you - click here
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong problem solving abilities. 
Additionally, to be successful in the ES&H Engineer role, you will need experience with:
  • Implementing ES&H programs consistent with EPA, OSHA, NC DENR, US DOE, DOT & Homeland Security, IATA.
  • Implementing ES&H programs using behavior-based safety initiatives. 
  • Implementing ES&H management systems such as ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, or other industry ES&H standards.
  • Communicating with, mentoring and influencing all levels of an organization.

The Role

Reporting to the Site Leader, as the ES&H Engineer you will be responsible for evaluating, designing, implementing, and maintaining workplace Environmental, Safety, and Health programs that are consistent with regulations, ISO 14001, corporate ES&H standards, internal management system standards, and industry best management practices. Initially, for the first year or two you will focus your efforts predominantly on Safety & Health initiatives. You will develop and implement action plans, systems, and procedures to control Safety & Health risks to all employees in the workforce. For example, you’ll lead and implement programs in the areas of fall protection, confined spaces, electrical safety, etc. Working with key stakeholders throughout the Concord facility, you will ensure all employees are fully trained on these essential S&H initiatives. You will partner with the ES&H team at our nearby Charlotte facility on a weekly basis as you share best practices across the two sites. More specifically, you will: 
  • Serve as a technical “expert” and provide technical support to internal and external stakeholders’ regarding compliance with environmental, safety, and health regulations. 
  • Support programs to enhance environmental, safety, and health performance through education activities and other actions that encourage responsible behavior. Evaluate, design, and conduct training and materials in support of environmental, safety, and health initiatives. 
  • Evaluate environmental, safety, and health against corporate ES&H standards, and recommend and implement improvements to ensure compliance with these standards.
  • Organize and conduct environmental, safety, and health studies sufficient to identify hazards, risks, and trends. Conduct required industrial hygiene evaluations and sampling.
  • Perform trending analysis to improve health and safety performance by gathering data, developing reports, identifying gaps, evaluating risk and implementing process improvements and/or corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence. 
  • Coach and mentor all levels of personnel on critical skills, behaviors and techniques that build and sustain a zero injury/illness culture including developing and maintaining behavior based safety initiatives.
  • Recommend changes in procedures, processes, design or equipment. 
  • Evaluate designs for changes to facility and equipment for ES&H risks and provide recommendations to improving performance
  • Keep abreast of federal, state and local environmental, safety, and health regulations; review technical literature. 
  • Conduct comprehensive internal audits of compliance to environmental, occupational health and safety programs. 
  • Ensure emergency management programs are developed and maintained in a state of readiness for anticipated emergencies including hazards assessments, personnel training, equipment, and alerting systems. Respond to site emergencies to provide support and lead debriefing and action reviews.
  • Ensure ES&H programs for contractors and construction projects are implemented consistent with company standards, regulatory requirements, and best management practices.
  • Lead internal auditing programs that ensure ES&H program are compliant with ISO 14001, regulations, and company ES&H standards.
  • Support the ES&H Manager with the development of annual plans including goals, objectives, targets, training, audits, etc.
