Role Overview

Reporting directly to the Plant Manager (who manages both the Concord and Charlotte plants) and indirectly to the Vice President of Environmental Safety & Health, your key goal will be to effectively run the ES&H function for the Concord plant. At a high level, you'll spend about 80% of your time driving local ES&H initiatives and the remaining 20% providing strategic guidance and leadership to the site. The focus in this environment is mostly on the safety and employee health side, and most of the procedures are already in place. However, while the VP has oversight of the program, you’ll be given a good deal of autonomy to start or change programs, and to make recommendations for changes to current policy and procedure.

To assist you in your tasks, an ES&H Coordinator, who reports directly to you, is currently responsible for helping with incident reporting, focusing on investigations, and ensuring external contractors are trained on ES&H policies and procedures. You will also have the chance to help define her role as she experiences continued professional growth under your guidance. You will work hand-in-hand with your ES&H peer at the Charlotte facility to make some joint policy, and even just to get feedback on ideas you’re thinking of implementing only in Concord. We are ISO certified, so part of your role will be to follow the processes to maintain and renew that certification, and if you don’t have experience there, your peer in Charlotte will be a great resource.

There are a number of interesting projects coming soon, such as plant expansion and product transfer, where you’ll have a hand in ensuring smooth transition. One such project will be the addition of a line that involves chemicals that are new to us, so you’ll do work on the environmental side, and learn that part of the role if you don’t already have experience there. New projects will open many opportunities to make revisions and updates, or to start new programs to complement our efforts.

We have a Lean culture, and engage in continuous process improvement and Six Sigma across all functions (including ES&H). While we have already made an effort to get feedback from the functions that ES&H supports, you’ll continue to do this on an ongoing basis to find more ways to improve.

Some of your specific responsibilities will be to:
  • Act as ES&H advisor to Engineering/Operations teams regarding projects, tasks and operations.
  • Manage the development, implementation and maintenance of company Environmental & Safety policies.
  • Participate in the design and development of facilities, work areas and work procedures to evaluate potential safety hazards and make recommendations accordingly.
  • Ensure compliance with all ES&H regulations; stay tuned to new regulations that may impact the organization.
  • Manage departmental budget and expenditures.
  • Manage ISO EMS process maintenance, including site documents, internal audit procedures and external registrar audits.
  • Participate in on-call rotations for Emergency Response for Fire, Environmental or Medical emergencies.
  • Submit and maintain U.S. FDA drug matter files, annual regulatory compliance reviews and permit renewals.
  • Participate in the new product realization and commercialization process; review manufacturing work process descriptions for potential ES&H concerns.
  • Evaluate current and prospective critical suppliers and off-site service providers.
  • Coordinate the development of ES&H aspects of chemical procurement and tracking system.
  • Manage program development and administration of the global safety program.
  • Drive program development and management for special projects as required.
Note: this description is intended to give you a general overview of the position and is not an exhaustive listing of duties and responsibilities.

Why Celgard

High visibility and impact -- in this role, you’ll touch the entire plant, and with an indirect line to the VP of ES&H you’ll also have high visibility. Safety is our number one shared value (zero harm to the people, the environment, and the facility), and your leadership will help ensure the plant stays on track through policy, education, and oversight. We have had the same ES&H Manager since the plant opened a few years ago, and he did a great job creating a strong ES&H environment. However, this role is a chance for you to come in and take things to the next level, setting us up for success as the company grows.

Technology and innovation -- you’ll be working in a very high-technology industry and our products are used on a wide variety of consumer electronics devices. You can probably find a Celgard membrane on your desk right now in the form of your desktop, cell phone or other device. These products are constantly changing and evolving, and our current growth is creating many more opportunities.

Career options -- Celgard dynamically stewards our resources, particularly our most important resource: our people. Because of our unique market niches and proprietary technologies, we prefer to promote from within whenever possible. While we’re looking for someone who can grow in this role for several years, once you prove yourself, future opportunities will become available. Celgard is a company where you can build a long-range career.

Strong supervisor and department -- we have a strong team with a good deal of experience and industry insight, and your supervisor, who has been with the company for many years, knows it inside out. You will have the advantage of learning from a team that will help you build the foundation needed to grow and excel. Your manager has high expectations and will give you room to succeed. He provides clear direction and then lets the team run. As long as you’re hitting your deadlines and delivering quality work, you’ll enjoy the “elbow room” you need to take ownership of your role.

Strong growth environment -- Celgard and our parent company, Polypore International, Inc., continue to grow, as our product line is used in a diverse number of applications in robust markets, including laptops, cell phones, digital cameras, medical devices, and various military applications. We’re also making important strides in the electric vehicle space. In addition:
  • In 2009 we received a matching grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to support the development of the US EDV market. This funding supported construction of the Concord facility as well as expansion at our Charlotte plant.
  • In 2008 we acquired a new technology along with production facilities in Korea, so that we now have the broadest portfolio in our industry. In 2010 we began expanding the Korean facility.
  • In 2011 we expanded our Charlotte facility and added a Concord facility to serve growth in the consumer electronics market.
Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary and performance based bonus opportunity, we offer comprehensive benefits package that includes everything you’d expect such as Medical, Dental, and Vision insurances, a 401(k) plan, and PTO, and a few surprises, such as educational assistance and a candidate referral program.

Keys to Success

The right fit for this role has a high degree of expertise in ES&H issues for complex manufacturing environments. You’ll be the subject matter expert, so while times may arise where you don’t know an answer right off the top of your head, you’ll need to have the depth of experience to know what you don’t know, and to know how to do the right research to find the answers.

This is a team environment, so you’ll need to take a team-player approach to building relationships and driving consensus cross- functionally to implement new and existing programs. You’ll need to have the ability to engage diverse stakeholders and motivate them to give environmental issues the right priority, even as you compete for mind space with many other needs at the plant.

If you’re our ideal candidate, you’ll be able to:
  • Strike an appropriate balance between managing day-to-day ES&H operations and bringing forward new ideas for driving improvements.
  • Raise the bar on achieving ES&H targets and motivate your team to embrace this standard of excellence; you'll be a role model for your team as you deliver tangible contributions above and beyond the scope of your position.
  • Keep a "pulse" on emerging ES&H regulations and communicate your expertise throughout the organization.
  • Bring a high-energy approach, sense of urgency, and solid focus to manage multiple programs as you provide impeccable technical support to the site Managers.
  • Continually act as an ES&H champion, following the highest standards of safety throughout all sites and taking an active part in our ongoing training, education, and awareness building activities.
  • Remain adaptive in a 24/7 manufacturing environment and be ready to shift priorities as the need arises.
