Position Overview
We are looking for a
Battery Engineer / Cell Designer to join our team in Concord, NC, that specializes in the development of next generation battery separators. Primary job responsibilities include screening and defining advanced separators for the development and qualification of next generation products in accordance with Celgard’s technology roadmap.
Primary Responsibilities
- Develops and implements strategies for material characterizations.
- Uses statistical tools to evaluate effect of separator and cell treatment processes on cell performance.
- Critically thinks about and provides solutions to current shortcomings associated with advanced separators.
- Manages lithium-ion cell fabrication, testing, analysis, and data organization associated with the advanced separator development.
- Analyzes cell performance data and presents summaries in order to troubleshoot and improve high energy lithium-ion cell components as well as update R&D management team on developments.
- Interacts with laboratory technicians, scientists, and engineers to ensure battery-related testing tasks are completed within the agreed upon timeframe.
- Systematically reviews prior art and peer-reviewed publications for relevant information.
- Actively engages in intellectual property development.
- Ideally brings first-hand knowledge of cell assembly processes and cell testing at a battery manufacturer level to Celgard.
Specific Skills/Abilities
- Fundamental understanding of advanced lithium-ion battery technology with a focus on separator composition and structure.
- Demonstrates independent and creative thinking as well as complex problem solving.
- Fluent in electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and common potentiostatic and galvanostatic methods.
- Knowledge of lithium-ion battery assembly, characterization and failure analysis.
- Proficiency in data analysis and experimental design utilizing Minitab and/or other software preferred.
- Advanced written communication skills applied directly to the preparation of technical papers, patent specifications or presentations.
- Excellent oral communications skills and interface effectively with co-workers especially from Asia region (Japan, China, Korea).
Education/Experience
- Ph.D. in Materials Science or Chemical Engineering with a focus on Lithium Ion Battery technology.
- 1-3 years of working experience of Lithium Battery Designs and Mass Production in a leading battery manufacturer preferred.
- Fluent in English, knowledge of either Chinese or Japanese preferred, but not required.
