Opportunity Snapshot

In this position you will have the opportunity to be involved in a wide variety of accounting activities and make an impact in short order. Your role will involve much more than cost accounting, and include acting as a consultant to business decision makers and contributing to special projects. You'll join a smaller accounting team on which everyone has the flexibility to step outside their job description to learn and grow. You also will join a strong company: even while other industries are cutting back, we are continuing to grow at a rate higher than 10% year over year. Your success in this role could set you up to pursue diverse career paths within Celgard or Polypore International, Inc., our $537 million parent corporation.

While our preference is that you bring a couple of years of experience, just as important will be your proactive drive not only to learn, but also to seek out opportunities to showcase your talents. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have a degree in Accounting or other relevant discipline and solid knowledge of GAAP. You also will need proficiency with MS Excel. We're looking for a results-oriented professional with the ability to deliver appropriate products and services in an accurate, complete, and timely fashion.

Celgard is a recognized global leader in developing, manufacturing, and marketing battery separators that are used in high performance lithium battery markets. Celgard battery separators are polypropylene and/or polyethylene electrolytic membranes that offer excellent product uniformity, strength, chemical stability, and energy performance. We have aggressive strategic plans to double sales, revenue, and our bottom line over the next five years, backed by strong cash flow and a highly profitable business model.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • Demonstrated computer skills.
  • The ability to work in a team-based environment.
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively.
Preferred but not required:
  • CPA/CMA.
  • Cost accounting experience.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing company.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics AX.

What's in It for You

No slowing here -- Celgard and Polypore continue to grow, as our product line is used in a diverse number of applications, many in growth markets, including laptops, cell phones, digital cameras, medical devices, and various military applications. Consider:
  • In May 2008 we acquired a new technology along with production facilities in Korea, which means we now have the broadest portfolio in our industry.
  • Across our organization we are investing in process and infrastructure improvements so support our growth, such as expanding our Charlotte facility by 110,000 square feet and implementing an entirely new ERP.
  • We are proactive about strategically developing new products and product improvements, not just tweaking an existing line for individual customers.
  • The emerging market for technology related to electric and hybrid vehicles will only accelerate our growth over the next five to ten years.
Career development -- whether this is your first position out of college or the next step in a career already underway, you will expand your experience in multiple areas. We take a proactive approach to helping our people develop professionally, and if you have the initiative to do and be more, we'll support your efforts.

Grow with a solid team -- the entire Finance team is relatively new to Celgard, and each of us is committed to making a positive impact in all we do. The team values collaboration and works well together, and we welcome input and ideas from everyone. We view job descriptions as guidelines rather than boundary markers, and we all remain flexible, willing to shift gears in order to take on new opportunities.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary and bonus incentive program, we offer a comprehensive benefits package.

More About Your Role

Joining a Finance team of seven, you will report to the Cost Accounting Manager and get some of your direction from the General Accounting Supervisor. In a nutshell, your objectives will revolve around enabling the finance department as a whole to deliver improved business results by providing more accurate and timely information in regard to forecasts, budgets, and monthly financial reports and analysis. The role will include aspects of standard cost accounting, general accounting, variance analysis (manufacturing, inventory, purchasing), budgeting, and cost analysis.

Of your regular activities, you can expect to invest about 30% of your time in cost accounting, 30% in fixed assets, 25% in general accounting, and 15% in month-end close activities. You also will contribute to initiatives and projects. For example, we are slated to bring our new ERP on line in August here in Charlotte, and the entire Finance team will be involved. Next year we plan to implement the ERP in our Shanghai location, and you may contribute to that as well. You also will play a key role in taking our current fixed assets processes to the next level, including organizing a full physical inventory and putting in place best practices to ensure the accuracy of the data now and moving forward.

In addition, we all remain open to supporting the business in whatever ways we can. For instance, you may be involved in new business opportunities, such as evaluating investments in new equipment in order to enter new markets. In these activities you will interact with Sales & Marketing, Engineering, and other areas within Celgard.

In fact, we'll look to you to spend 10% to 15% of your time out on the manufacturing floor (and even more at first) in order to cultivate relationships with decision makers in that area, acquire a global understanding of our operations, and gain a strong sense of what the numbers mean in practice. You also may travel occasionally to Shanghai.

Keys to Success

To excel in this role you will be flexible and adaptable; pivotal to Celgard's success is our agility in responding to changes in the market, and we look for the same agility in all our people. You will help shape your own role moving forward, and our top performers are those who can see the opportunities behind the challenges. For example, during the ERP implementation we all will be learning together. There will be training and support, of course, but you'll be able to make an impact by taking the initiative to learn for yourself and then turning around to help others.

If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
