Opportunity Snapshot

This position offers you the opportunity to join an IT team that has a full slate of intriguing and challenge projects, including global implementations, that will give you the chance to learn new technologies. For example, we are currently rolling out MS Dynamics AX (formerly known as Axapta) here in Celgard's Charlotte, NC headquarters. Following that we'll implement it in our Asian locations, and then across sister companies within Polypore International, Inc., our $537 million parent corporation. In fact, the IT organization shares resources worldwide across Polypore, and you might become a subject matter expert for the entire corporation.

This role involves far more than mere maintenance (although you'll do that, too), and includes projects such as consolidating and standardizing some 50 databases. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have solid database and ERP application administration experience, ideally in manufacturing, and the full range of DBA skills, including relating tables, pulling reports, data-use design, and more. We're looking for a professional who is familiar with Sarbanes-Oxley guidelines and has experience administering databases in an ERP environment.

Celgard is a recognized global leader in developing, manufacturing, and marketing battery separators that are used in high performance lithium battery markets. Celgard battery separators are polypropylene and/or polyethylene electrolytic membranes that offer excellent product uniformity, strength, chemical stability, and energy performance. While other manufacturing sectors are contracting, we have posted double-digit growth year over year for the past several years. We have aggressive strategic plans to double sales, revenue, and our bottom line over the next five years, backed by strong cash flow and a highly profitable business model.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of the following: Experience managing DBs of one or more of the following applications is preferred but not required:

What's in It for You

A steady stream of fresh challenges -- you'll broaden your experience and deepen your skills as you contribute to a number of projects, all of which support our commitment to employing best IT practices. The Charlotte headquarters is the beta site for most initiatives, and you might become a global team member as we roll projects out to our other locations.

Career development -- the Charlotte facility is the data center not only for Celgard, but also for all of Polypore, and as you contribute to our growth you will be in a position to take advantage of the "upward draft" of opportunity it creates. We take a proactive approach to helping our people develop professionally, and if you have the initiative to do and be more, we'll support your efforts.

Stability and growth -- Celgard and Polypore continue to grow, as our product line is used in a diverse number of applications (many in growth markets) including laptops, cell phones, digital cameras, medical devices, and various military applications. We have recently acquired companies in the US and Asia to continue our expansion.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary and bonus incentive program, we offer a comprehensive benefits package.

Great place to live and work -- with history stretching back before the American Revolution, Charlotte has burgeoned into a cosmopolitan city with a Southern flair. The "Queen City" is the nation's second largest financial center, and a number of Fortune 500 corporations make their headquarters here. In 2008 Relocate-America.com named Charlotte the "Best Place to Live in America," based on such factors as employment opportunities, crime rates, and housing affordability. Relocation assistance is available.

More About Your Role

Reporting to our IT Applications Manager, you'll join a team that also includes two Developers and one Contract Developer. An Infrastructure team rounds out the IT department. Celgard has grown significantly in recent years, both organically and via acquisition, and the IT department is pursuing initiatives to ensure standardization and best practices across the organization.

In a nutshell you will install, tune, maintain, and monitor the MS Dynamics AX ERP system and similar applications, including the three tier structure development, test and production. Your key focus will be supporting our implementation of MS Dynamic AX, which is currently underway. Other projects may include consolidating about 50 databases, bringing them onto the same version of SQL, and then tuning and maintaining them. In the implementation and other activities, you'll focus on local systems (we have about 300 users here in Charlotte) and then expand your purview to include global operations.

Your activities will include:
  • Developing database backup plans, diagnostics, and disaster recovery plans in order to safeguard the integrity of the system.
  • Designing, installing, tuning, maintaining, upgrading, and monitoring SQL Server Database Systems, Reporting Services, Analysis Services and Integration Services on enterprise and dedicated Windows servers in a clustered / multiple server environment. This will include analysis of data issues and table design, view design, stored procedure design, and data cube development.
  • Managing, troubleshooting, and debugging the system, including storage management, DB performance tuning, DB software debugging, scheduling, change/configuration maintenance, and more.
  • Applying good analytical and problem solving skills to evaluate database information and architecture and identify appropriate improvements and solutions. This will include facilitating root cause analysis on database issues and escalating with application/tool vendors when service interruptions occur.
  • Applying patches and software updates in coordination with infrastructure staff, application development staff, and business users.
  • Ensuring standardization of systems implementation, support techniques, and adherence to formal processes, change control, best practices, and total quality practices in all activities.
  • Working within the requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.
  • Overseeing rights administration for the environment.
You will need to be on call 24/7. When a database goes down, it can have a major impact on our ability to deliver on our production commitments. Of course, the better you set things up, the fewer calls you will get. If you have the mentoring skills, you might train one of your IT colleagues to back you up regarding on-call responsibilities.

Keys to Success

To excel in this role you will bring a strong sense of ownership and accountability for the database systems, but also develop "transparency" into them so that they integrate seamlessly with other areas of IT and are readily accessible by other IT professionals. In fact, while much of your work will be independent, you will interact a good bit with others in IT in our collaborative environment. Occasionally you will work with end users, particularly with regard to reports.

If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
